Representative Matt Hudson (R-Naples) continued his longstanding commitment to bring civics to our schools this week by addressing two classes at Immokalee High School.
The importance that our young people will play in the future of Florida can only be enhanced if they understand how Government works and what role they can play in Government.” stated Representative Hudson.
Representative Hudson has been to High Schools, Community Colleges, Colleges and Universities throughout his district to reach out to students so that they know that their voice is heard and that they can make a difference. Each talk addresses the structure of state Government, how an idea becomes a law, the importance of registering to vote, voter registration and ultimately a long interactive session of questions and answers.
Representative Hudson poses each student with the following statement and question “You have lived in Florida a long while, or a little while or perhaps all of your life but you have a vested interest in Florida. If you could fix one thing in Florida what would you fix?” “The answers are truly encouraging and our future Florida is in good hands” said Representative Hudson.
To date Representative Matt Hudson has spoken to students at Gulf Coast H.S., Golden Gate H.S., Palmetto Ridge H.S., and Immokalee H.S. in Collier County and Everglades H.S. in Broward County. He has also spoken to students at Edison College, Florida Gulf Coast University, Broward Community College and Hodges University.

Civics are very important in schools. I find it so amazing that people around me and/or in neighborhoods that I speak in, will talk about a topic they have not research, and complain about issues, but when it is time to vote, they don’t. Our country is about democracy, it’s our right. People have died for this country just so that they can have a right to vote and if you want change for the better, then learn what the steps are. Learn how to get your point across. Learn the system, and use the system to get things done. People should not just sit on the sidelines complaining and doing nothing about it. It’s okay to disagree, but learn to understand the differences as to why we disagree, and help make positive changes. Change is always good.
When we are more concerned about ourselves, our needs, our feelings, our points of view, our ideas, our position, our families, our jobs, and our titles, there will not and cannot be any unity in this country. We as Americans, need to learn that: not only must we be concerned about our relationship with God, but also our relationship to others. Together we stand, divided we fall. Americans need to wake up.
