Hudson Moves Measure To End “Marriage Penalty”

Representative Hudson was the primary sponsor of House Bill (HB) 647 which repeals the marriage penalty currently paid by spouses who are added to the deed of a home previously owned by their spouse.

“As the law stands, if a Floridian marries a homeowner and adds his or her name to the deed held by their spouse, they pay what is in essence a marriage tax,” said Representative Matt Hudson (R-Naples), sponsor of HB 647. “Yet the tax does not apply when a spouse is removed from a deed.  The state is rewarding divorce and penalizing marriage. This common sense measure ends an unfair double taxation.  While the bill won’t solve all our property tax problems, it is a small step toward restoring fairness to our current property tax system.”

Representative Hudson was also a co-sponsor of HB 177, sponsored by Representative Garret Richter (R-Naples), which revises the Truth In Millage (TRIM) notice to include millage rates by adding three additional columns for the following information: Last year’s millage rate; Current year’s millage rate if the proposed budget change is made; and current year’s millage rate if no budget change is made.

My district is ground zero for Florida’s property tax crisis,” added Representative Hudson. “I hope these measures will help make strides toward reforming our property tax system and providing relief to Florida property owners.”
